Here we GO!!!
Oh! I do love to be beside the seaside!!
This term, we will be off and running (or possibly walking as the sand can make running difficult) as we visit the seaside. This was a place of magic and adventure for so many, during the days of Queen Victoria, the Industrial Revolution all around, the increase in railways and travel on them and, the opportunity for the many and not just the few to enjoy ‘time off’.
As they say now, however, ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. But all play and no work makes him something worse.’ (Samuel Smiles) and so, we are ready to work! We will be learning about the historical advent of the holiday, the changes wrought by the railway and industrialisation and how the seaside became the destination of choice for the Victorians. When all the history has been talked about and addressed, then it’s time to build – FAIRGROUND RIDES!! We will be looking at the way they work, how places, like the Blackpool Pleasure Beach, have developed and then attempting to build rides of our own (have no fear – they will be models, NOT real rides).
So, come along for our next journey! Think of it like travelling the line between Preston and Blackpool, but before the electrification which has kept it off line for months! The delays, the sites, the smell of diesel – in fact, don’t think of it like that. Think of it like the Pendolino to London! Faster, cleaner (usually) and full of the excitement that awaits you at the other end!
